Wind Damage Roof Insurance Claim Checklist

Santa Ana gusts lift shingles, break seal strips, and slide tile long before a ceiling stain shows up. Wind claims get underpaid when that evidence goes undocumented — work these seven steps in order and take the printable PDF to the adjuster meeting.

Upload your damage photos

Add photos of the wind damage and describe what each one shows. They become numbered exhibits in a claim-evidence appendix at the back of your downloadable PDF — the format adjusters expect.

Documents to keep in one folder

  • Policy declarations page and wind/hail endorsements
  • Claim number, adjuster name, phone, and email
  • Wind event date, direction, and recorded peak gusts
  • Dated photos of creased, lifted, and missing shingles on every slope
  • Photos of bent metal: ridge vents, drip edge, gutters, flashing
  • Independent wind-damage inspection report with seal-strip findings
  • Line-item contractor estimate
  • Insurer scope sheet and estimate
  • Receipts for emergency tarping, mitigation, and lodging
  • Signed contract, permits, final invoice, and completion photos

Six mistakes that get wind claims underpaid

  • Cleaning up the debris field before photographing where each piece landed.
  • Only documenting the street-facing slope when wind damage is usually worst on the windward side.
  • Accepting a "replace a few shingles" repair scope after seal strips failed across an entire slope.
  • Reporting the loss weeks later, letting the carrier argue the damage came from age or later rain.
  • Letting a storm-chasing door-knocker file the claim, then disappear mid-project.
  • Forgetting to claim recoverable depreciation once the wind repairs are finished.

Wind damage roof claim FAQs

Does homeowners insurance cover wind damage to a roof in California?

Most California homeowners policies cover sudden wind damage, including missing and creased shingles, displaced tile, damaged flashing, and the resulting water intrusion. What is typically excluded is gradual wear or a roof already at the end of its service life. Some policies carry a separate wind/hail deductible or a wind exclusion, so check your declarations page and endorsements.

How much wind does it take to damage a roof?

Asphalt shingles can begin to lift and lose their seal strips in gusts around 45 to 60 mph, and Santa Ana events in San Diego County routinely exceed that. Older shingles, hot-weather-brittle sealant, and improperly nailed courses fail at lower speeds, which is why two neighboring roofs can respond very differently to the same gust.

What does wind damage on a roof look like?

Look for missing shingles, horizontal creases along the nail line, shingles that lift by hand because the seal strip broke, slipped or cracked tile, exposed underlayment, and bent or detached ridge vents, drip edge, and gutters. Creasing and broken seal strips are the evidence adjusters weigh most heavily, and both are easy to miss from the ground.

How long do I have to file a wind damage roof claim?

Policies require prompt notice and California law generally allows at least one year from the date of loss, but waiting invites a denial. Adjusters compare your report date to recorded wind events, and damage that spreads after the storm can be excluded as failure to mitigate. Report within 24 to 72 hours whenever possible.

Will insurance replace my whole roof for wind damage or just repair it?

It depends on how widespread the damage is. Isolated missing shingles on one slope are usually repaired, but when seal strips have failed across a slope or matching materials are no longer available, a full slope or full replacement is appropriate. A line-item inspection report documenting each affected slope is what moves a claim from spot repair to replacement.

What if my wind damage claim is denied or underpaid?

Request the written denial or scope sheet, then submit a supplement with your contractor's line-item estimate, dated photos of creasing and seal failure, and applicable code requirements. Most wind claims are underpaid because slopes or accessories were left out rather than outright denied. If the carrier still disagrees, you can request re-inspection, appraisal, or file a complaint with the California Department of Insurance.

Should I get a roof inspection before the adjuster comes out for wind damage?

Yes. An independent inspection gives you drone imagery, documented seal-strip testing on every slope, and a line-item estimate before the adjuster sets the scope. Homeowners who bring their own documentation to the adjuster meeting consistently end up with more complete scopes.

Can my roofer meet the insurance adjuster for my wind claim?

Yes. A licensed contractor can be on the roof with the adjuster, demonstrate seal-strip failure, provide a line-item estimate, and answer technical scope questions. In California only a licensed public adjuster or attorney can negotiate the claim itself, so we supply the roofing evidence and you make the claim decisions.

General guidance only — not legal or insurance advice. Coverage depends on your policy and carrier.
