Hail Damage Roof Insurance Claim Checklist
Hail damage is almost invisible from the driveway — bruised shingles, hairline tile cracks, and granules in the gutter. Claims are won with stone-size photos, dented soft metals, and impact counts on every slope. Work these seven steps and take the printable PDF to the adjuster meeting.

Add photos of the hail damage and describe what each one shows. They become numbered exhibits in a claim-evidence appendix at the back of your downloadable PDF — the format adjusters expect.

Six mistakes that get hail claims underpaid
- Waiting months to file because the roof "looks fine" from the ground — hail bruising is invisible from the driveway.
- Cleaning gutters or pressure washing before the granule loss and dents are photographed.
- Accepting a "cosmetic damage only" determination without asking for the policy language in writing.
- Letting only the street-facing slope be chalked and counted when hail is directional.
- Signing with a storm-chasing door-knocker who leaves the county once the checks clear.
- Forgetting to claim recoverable depreciation, or skipping the impact-resistant shingle discount on the new roof.
Hail damage roof claim FAQs
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to a roof in California?
Most California homeowners policies cover sudden hail damage to the roof and the resulting water intrusion. Two policy details decide the payout: whether you have a separate wind/hail deductible, and whether a cosmetic-damage exclusion applies. Both appear on your declarations page and endorsements, so read them before the adjuster visit.
What size hail damages a roof?
Stones around one inch — quarter size — commonly bruise asphalt shingles, and three-quarter-inch stones can crack aging tile or dent soft metals. Older, brittle, or sun-baked roofs are damaged by smaller stones. This is why photographing a stone next to a coin or tape measure during the storm is the single most useful piece of evidence you can collect.
What does hail damage on a roof look like?
On asphalt shingles it looks like random black bruises where granules were knocked off and the mat is soft or dented. On tile it appears as spider cracks, chipped edges, or punched holes on the up-slope face. The most reliable indicator is dented soft metals: gutters, downspouts, vent hoods, ridge vents, flashing, and HVAC condenser fins.
How do adjusters measure hail damage on a roof?
They chalk test squares — usually 10 feet by 10 feet — on each slope and count the hail impacts inside each square. Carriers apply a threshold count per square to determine repair versus replacement. Because the counts are done per slope, having your own inspection with documented counts on every slope is what prevents a partial scope.
How long do I have to file a hail damage roof claim?
Policies require prompt notice and California law generally allows at least one year from the date of loss, but hail claims filed months later are the most heavily scrutinized. Adjusters match your report date against radar and hail-swath data, and later damage can be excluded as failure to mitigate. Report within 24 to 72 hours of the event whenever possible.
What is a cosmetic damage exclusion on a hail claim?
It is an endorsement letting the carrier decline damage that changes appearance without affecting function — dented metal roofing or gutters, for example. It is often misapplied to asphalt shingles where granule loss has exposed the mat, which shortens roof life and is functional damage. Ask for the exclusion language in writing and submit photos showing exposed mat or cracked tile.
Will insurance replace my whole roof for hail damage or just repair it?
It depends on the documented impact counts per slope and whether matching materials are still available. Scattered impacts on one slope are usually repaired, while counts above the carrier's threshold across multiple slopes support full replacement. Discontinued tile or shingle profiles also push a claim toward replacement because a repair cannot be matched.
What if my hail damage claim is denied or underpaid?
Request the written denial or scope sheet, then submit a supplement with chalked impact-count photos per slope, soft-metals evidence, your contractor's line-item estimate, and applicable code requirements. Most hail claims are underpaid because slopes or accessories were left out rather than outright denied. If the carrier still disagrees you can request re-inspection, appraisal, or file a complaint with the California Department of Insurance.
